How To Do A Waterfall Braid/Cascade Braid

The waterfall braid also known as the cascade braid recently exploded as the new "trend braid" of the season. The waterfall effect looks cool and complex, but it's easier to style than you think. Give this beautiful braid a try when Beautylish takes you through the how-to!

STEPS 1 + 2

Section Off

The waterfall braid works best on straight or loose waves. Brush out all the knots with a wide tooth comb. Part your hair how you normally would, and begin your braid on the right side of your part. Grab the top section and divide into three strands.

STEPS 3 + 4

Braid As Usual

Braid your strands regularly three times, beginning from the right strand. When you get to the left strand (the part closest to the middle of the scalp), add more hair to it like a French braid and fold that strand to the center.

STEP 5

Drop the Strand

This is where it gets tricky. After you've French braided your left strand (now center), drop the right strand and let it fall down. Pick up another small section of hair next to where your original strand fell—that's your new right strand.

STEP 6

Step and Repeat

Repeat this process—French braid the left strand, drop the right strand, and pick up an adjacent new piece. Gradually cascade the style towards the middle of your head.

STEP 7

Pin and Secure

Once you've reached a comfortable point to stop your braid, secure it to your scalp with bobby pins. You don't have to pin up your hair perfectly in this section since you'll cover up the pins with a hair accessory later.

STEPS 8 + 9 + 10

Fishtail It!

Braid the remaining piece of hair left from your cascade into a fishtail braid. Not sure how to create this mermaid-inspired style? It's easy with this helpful fishtail braid tutorial. Secure the braid with a thin hair tie.

STEP 11

Accessorize

Add a cute bow or flower to hide your bobby pins and give this look some extra hair flair. Secure your barrette tightly to your scalp and braid for a firm hold. 

Take the extra strand of hair on the opposite side of your face and pin it back into the flower barrette so it blends in with your cascade. Spritz with a light-hold hairspray, and you've got yourself a beautiful and romantic summer hair style!

1940s Hair Tutorial

So I thought I would share an easy updated version of the 1940′s classic–the victory roll. I have bangs which makes this style a little tricky. I decided to do a side part and comb my bangs to one side, but this style can easily be done with a middle part if you prefer.

1. Start by wrapping your hair around a 1.5 inch curling iron, holding the ends of your hair out of the iron. I like to curl larger sections of hair to get a more wavy Veronica Lake type look. Continue around your head until all of your hair is wavy.
2. Separate one section of your hair from your ear forward.
3. Back comb (tease) it slightly. I do this because I have very fine hair, if you have thick hair this step is not necessary.
4. Wrap the section of hair in a counterclockwise motion around your index finger.
5. Continue wrapping until all the hair is around your finger.
6. Pull out your finger and rest the cone of hair on the top of your head. Secure with a bobby pin.
7. Do the same to the other side of your head.
8. Secure with a bobby pin. Comb fly-aways down and spray with hairspray to set.

HOW TO AVOID HAT HAIR

A winter perk is breaking out the cute hat collection, but what’s a girl to do when she has to remove the hat and confront the dreaded “hat hair” situation? Maritza Buelvas here, and I’ve developed a fun and easy technique for avoiding hat hair, keeping your hair in place from the winter winds and fighting frizz all at the same time. Since this style makes the grade in the Windy City (where I’m from), I know it will work wherever you live!

SUPPLIES:

• medium barrel curling iron
• volume hair spray
• fine tooth teasing comb
• hair pins
• invisible hair elastic
• a fabulous hat
• Spray hair all over with volume enriching hair spray.
• Wrap small sections of hair around a medium-sized barrel curling iron to give texture and style-ability to your hair. If your hair has plenty of natural texture, you can skip this step.
• Create a three dimensional braid by doing a standard three-stand braid, but tucking strands underneath (as opposed to on top) to give hair lift and depth on one side of your head. (Note: A “3D” braid keeps its look and volume when wearing any kind of hat.)
• Repeat the same step on the other side of your head.
• Lift and tuck any hair that’s framing your neck by simply rolling your hair upwards and pinning the ends into place.
• Now you’re ready to put on your favorite winter hat. And the best part is when you decide to take it off, this hairstyle will still look great.

HOW TO HOT ROLL

You know that amazingly bouncy look we always see in too-good-to-believe hair commercials? Well, I never thought it’d actually be possible to achieve that on my own, but ever since Martha Lynn showed us how to properly use hot rollers I’ve been singing a slightly different tune. Some of you may already have this styling skill down to an art, but for those of you who don’t, using hot rollers is one trick you’ll want to keep in your arsenal for years to come. Here’s how it’s done…

1. Create a section at the very front, top of your head and pull hair forward. Use a 1.5-inch roller to roll hair onto itself as pictured.
2. Insert pin facing forward to secure.
3. Repeat going back down, creating a mohawk down your head.
4. Secure with clamp-style clips. Note: the more hair you put in each roller, the bigger, looser and more subtle the curls will be.
5. Section hair on sides in half, then curl by rolling underneath and securing.
6. Spray all over and let sit.
7. Remove curlers, run fingers through your hair, and spray for hair that stays bouncy and moveable.

FAUX BOB - Classic Hair Style

To my long-haired ladies out there: how often to you get that impulsive urge to just chop it all off? I’ve gotten (and scratched) the itch twice, and following both incidents I spent the next two years kicking myself as my hair slowly inched its way back to its original length. That said, today Martha Lynn brings us a chic hairdo that also happens to be my new best friend: the faux bob. And they say you can’t have your cake and eat it too! Keep reading to learn how to give yourself the temporary chop, and I’d love to know if this is a look you’d try on yourself.

1. Begin with curled hair (the more hair, the better!) Collect a triangular section of hair at the nape of your neck. Tease and wrap into a messy bun, then secure with bobby pins. This will act as the “nest” that you’ll pin the rest of your hair too.
2. Clip crown layer of hair out of the way and grab a section of hair above the bun.
3. Tease hair section and loosely tuck the end of the hair under the “nest” to create the shape of a bob. Secure with bobby pins and spray.
4. Repeat going around the head, continuing to anchor longer strands into the bottom of the bun and pinning.
5. Once the middle layer of hair is all pinned, let down the crown layer of hair and repeat, tucking and pinning the very ends into the bun. Leave tendrils of hair long in the front, and touch up curls as needed. Spray.

THE SEW-IT-UP UPDO

When stylist Lauren Phillips of Sabia Salon introduced us to this secret updo technique we simply couldn’twait to share it with you here on the blog. We’ll admit we were skeptical at first (will the string even hold?) but we’re full-blown converts now that we know it’s actually more secure than using bobby pins. “This technique is wonderful,” she says, “because you can dance, run around town, or even sleep with the sew-it-up and never worry about bobby pins coming out.” She uses the sewing technique often on clients who need to put their hair up quickly for formal events. To demonstrate the look on model Jessica Thompson, Lauren used the Sewing Kit from Kevin Murphy. And even if you don’t have access to the Kevin Murphy kit, don’t be afraid to hit your local craft store for similar supplies. “This style is great for the crafty and creative,” says Lauren. “I’ve even used gold and silver string and added little flowers!” The finished look is a tousled updo that works as well for both casual and formal moments. Read below to discover this amazing technique that you can learn to do on yourself with practice.

1. If your hair is clean, add texture by using a curling iron to give some bend or mousse and a quick shot with the dryer to give it some workability. If it’s already slightly dirty, great! Thread your string through a large plastic needle. We used a wax coated thread that comes in the Kevin Murphy Sewing Kit.
2. Gather the hair into a mid ponytail and hold with your non dominant hand, then push the needle and thread through the hair laterally below the base of the pony.
3. Repeat the last step twice more, looping the string through the base and pulling it through.
4. Pull the string taught after the third loop.
5. Create a second “stitch” by lifting the pony up and repeating the looping technique (three loops) a few inches above. Pulling the string taught on the final loop in the middle of the pony base.
6. Continue to grip the pony tail at it’s base and let the “tail” hang naturally. Take the needle and stitch the tail tightly against the secured hair.
7. Now the pony should be secure.
8. Twist the hair slightly and continue stitching at random to tack the hair into place.
9. Cut the string leaving a tail small enough to tuck and hide. There’s no need to “knot” your thread — the style should hold on it’s own. Soften the style by pulling a few pieces out around the hairline and use your hands to adjust where necessary. Finish the look with light hairspray.

The Braided Crown Hair Tutorial

Today Jacquelyn from Lark & Linen is here to put a braided ‘do back at the top of our list of must-try hair styles! This stunning silhouette is easy to recreate any weekday morning, but it pushes your look way beyond ‘everyday.’ Give it a try!

1. Give yourself a deep part and tease the crown of your head to give your roots some volume.

2. On the fuller side of your part, grab a 2-inch section of hair and split it into three equal pieces.

3. Begin by moving the front piece underneath the middle piece.

4. Move the back piece under the new middle piece.

5. Add a ½-inch section of hair to the new front piece, and place the new front piece underneath the middle piece. Continue to do so until you’ve reached your ear.

6. As it begins to form, start back-pinning the braid with bobby pins. This should give it some volume! Try to tuck the pins inside the braid so they aren’t visible.

7. Once you’ve braided to your ear, finish the rest of the braid normally (you no longer want to do a Dutch braid at this point!). Tie with a clear elastic.

8. Repeat the same process on the other side of your part.

9. Wrap both braids around the back of your head. Tuck the ends of the braids underneath each other, pinning as needed.

10. Don’t be afraid to gently loosen and tousle your braid to give it some added texture and volume. Spray with a flexible-hold hairspray and go about your day feeling extra chic!

How To: The Carrie Bradshaw Bun

Hi Glitter Guide! Lauren here with a fun and easy hair tutorial! I’m still a huge fan of the the iconic Carrie Bradshaw’s sky-high bun. When paired with a feminine dress and some pretty Manolos, you’ll be ready to conquer the world (and the city!). There are many different ways to go about achieving this look–heavy teasing, the innovative sock–but for this particular style, I opted for a hair bun I found on Amazon called a “hair rat.” It’s super easy to use–and for only $4, you can effortlessly create the perfect bun. Here are the steps!

1. Start with your hair in a high ponytail. Mine just happened to be already curled, but straight locks work even better!
2. Have the hair rat ready to begin rolling your bun.
3. Starting from the ends of your hair, take the hair rat and roll underneath the ponytail.
4. Make sure all hair is gathered and that it is tightly wrapped around the hair rat. Roll all the way down to the ponytail holder.
5. Take the ends of the hair rat and pull to the front, creating a donut shape. Snap the ends of the hair rat together.
6. Loosely pull hair from the sides of the bun to cover the front so that the hair is evenly distributed. Bobby pin the bun all around to secure.
