Switch To Silk

Switch To Silk

I think that most of us sleep on a cotton pillow case, but there are so many benefits to switching to silk or satin. Not only is it better for your skin, but it does wonders for your hair! Cotton robs your hair of moisture, is more likely to cause bed head (especially if you have bangs), and is much harsher on your hair, causing damage and split ends. It doesn’t seem like it would make much of a difference, but we sleep on it every night, so it adds up. Silk and satin pillow cases also feel luxurious — definitely worth the extra expense!

Massage Your Scalp

Massage Your Scalp

Giving yourself a scalp massage in the shower every morning may seem like a waste of time, but it really does stimulate your hair growth and enhance the strength of your roots. So, if you’re growing your hair out, try to do this every day! Why not? It feels great! Did you know that the increased blood flow to your scalp from a massage can also put you in a better mood, reduce stress, and relieve pain by improving circulation? Sounds like it’s worth every minute.

Brush Before You Wash

Brush Before You Wash

Most of us have never even considered the idea of brushing our hair before we jump in the shower, but it makes sense. We lose a lot of hair during the washing process, and guess where all of that hair goes? Down the drain! To reduce clogs, brush before you wash, especially if you are prone to tangles.

Gorgeous Soft Waves with No Heat

Gorgeous Soft Waves with No Heat

Hello Beautiful!~
Here’s a easy hair trick I’ve been using for years. This simple hair trick requires no heat or products, but is a great way to enhance your curls/waves and eliminate frizz. Scroll down to see instructions and tips on how it can even work for straight hair! Good luck.
For wavy/curly hair: This trick works best on slightly wavy to curly hair to enhance the waves. I didn’t use any products before or after in the pictures above, but using a little curling cream before or hairspray after will help hold the curls too. Remember, that the key to this trick is allowing your hair to finish drying in the twists.
For straight hair: If you have straight hair and want waves/curls, twist as pictured and clips the ends togerther in front of you. You should look like you’re wearing your hair as a necklace. Still not working? Click over to my other Beachy Waves with No Heat Tutorial. This one works WONDERS;)
In a hurry?: Dry your hair with a dryer a bit before twisting. This will cut down the dry time and maximize your curls! I sometimes let my hair air dry and when my hair is just slightly damp… that’s when I’ll start twisting. The key to this hair trick is allowing your hair to finish drying in the twists.

6 Ways to Curl Your Hair Without Heat

6 Ways to Curl Your Hair Without Heat

Love having curly, luscious locks, but the heat is taking a toll on your hair? Or maybe you just don’t have the time to primp your mane in the AM because you have a close relationship with your snooze button. We get it! Give your curling iron a break and try these no heat methods to waking up with gorgeous, flowy curls.

The Honey Bun All you’ll need for this one is a few bobby pins and a smoothing spray like Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Finish 5 in 1 Serum Spray. Lightly spray product on air-dried hair and bring all of your hair up as if you’re going to make a ponytail. Instead, you’re going to twist hair from the base all the way up to your ends and wrap it into bun form. Secure with pins and sleep on it! Let loose in the morning and viola! Your curls are good to go!
Texturizing Twist Use a sea-salt infused styling spray like L’Oréal Paris EverStyle Texture Series Beach Spray to scrunch and twist into damp or dry hair for perfectly textured waves in seconds, heat free! If it’s close to bedtime, spritz the texturizing spray all over, twist sections of your hair and pin them up with claw clips overnight for anintentional bed head look!

Flexi Rods
Great for short or long hair! Apply a small amount of Matrix Curl Contouring Lotion to nearly dry hair for added body and bounce. Grab a small section of your hair and wrap it around the rod from root to tip. Once you’ve wrapped the entire strand, coil the rod upwards to stay in place. Repeat until all of your hair is immersed in flexi rods and you kind of look like Medusa (a much prettier version, of course!). Leave them in overnight and remove in the morning for full, bouncy curls!
MDC Quick Tip: Brush out the spirals for a glam look and set your locks with a flexible hold spray like Pureology Strengthening Control Zero Dulling Hairspray.
Rag Wrapping
Yes, this exists! This old-school way is perfect for hair that just refuses to hold a curl! Cut a soft fabric rag or an old T-shirt into 1-inch wide strips (something clean, ladies — these will be in your hair!). For glossy and tangle-free curls, add L’Oréal Paris EverCurl Silk and Gloss Dual Oil Care to wet hair and comb through. Divide hair into small sections and place the rag at the end of your hair, rolling upwards toward your scalp. Once you reach your roots, tie the ends of the rag to form a knot! Repeat until you’vewrapped all of your hair. Once you unroll them in the morning, comb through the hair with your fingers and you’re good to go.
Sponge Rollers Your mother probably still has a set of these in a bathroom drawer somewhere. Similar to velcro rollers, sponge rollers will curl your hair without heat or the risk of snagging your hair (thank you, velcro!). Start with damp hair and a curling cream for 24-hour hold and shine like Pureology Illuminating Curl. Open the clip on the roller and roll a section of hair from end to root. Be sure to clip it shut on the underside, so the roller doesn’t hang loose. Repeat until all your hair is tightly rolled and hit the hay. Just unroll and finger comb when you wake up.
Headband Curls Grab a stretchy headband and put it on your head over damp hair (so hip!). Twist a small section of hair, starting by your ear and then loop it around the headband. Add more hair to your next twist and repeat the looping until you’re out of hair! If you have layers and notice a few strands peeking out, use Kérastase Paris Forme Fatale to tuck away strays and provide added shape. Take out the headband in the morning and enjoy those heat-free spirals.

The Perfect Sock Bun

The Perfect Sock Bun

1) Tie hair in ponytail and place donut 2) loop ends of hair around donut 3) tuck ends 4) roll down to base 5) gather and pin.
Here’s the longer version with helpful tips:
  1. Secure your hair in a high ponytail and pull the ponytail through the center of yoursock bun donut.
  2. Place the donut about 1/2 way down the length of your ponytail and get ready to rock and roll.
  3. Wrap the ponytail end around the donut once. With the remaining end of the ponytail, continue to wrap/tuck around the sock bun donut using your index finger and thumb to grab and pull the hair through the donut center.
    * Put your fingers through the center and use them to gather and pull the hair through. Trying to shove the hair through the center of the donut without catching with your index finger and thumb will result in a messy and loose bun.
    * At this point, it’s easier to move your hair in and through the donut center rather than trying to move or roll the donut.
  4. Once the ends are wrapped around the donut, begin rolling the donut down the remainder of your hair. As if you’re rolling your sleeve, roll the sock bun down towards the base of the ponytail.
For this step, roll and move the donut down as opposed to step 3 where you’re just moving the hair.
    * Use the end of a comb to help tuck in the strands while you roll/wrap. Don’t worry too much about it being neat at this point. Just need those ends tucked and wrapped.
    * If the bun is too loose (too big), gently hold the entire bun with both hands and pull the rolled bun away from the base of the ponytail. This will tighten the hair around the donut, therefore tightening the bun. Start to roll/tuck again towards the base of your ponytail.
  5. Gather the ends of the bun to close and complete the look. Use a couple of bobby pins to secure and tidy up the bun!

How To : No Heats Curls

How To : No Heats Curls

Before bed…
  1. Wash your hair and let it air dry a bit. When your hair is slightly damp, split into 2 sections (right and left). Use a little curling cream if you like. Take a section and start twisting at the roots/base, all the way to the ends. Here’s the key: Twist well and make sure you’re combing your hair with your fingers as you’re twisting. You want to make sure even the ‘center’ of your twists are twisting too (think funnel of a tornado).
  2. Once you’ve twisted to the ends, bring the ends to the crown of your head and clip. Then use 1-2 more to help keep the twist in place.
  3. Twist the other side in the same direction (twist both sides away from face, or towards face). Bring the ends to the crown of your head right along the first twist. Use the same 2-3 clips to hold both twists in place. Re-position clips as needed, making sure both ends of the twists have a clip securing them.
In the morning…
  • Remove the clips and piece the curls. Or just flip your hair over and back. Viola! You should be quite happy with your “Oh, I just rolled out of bed looking this good” waves!
  • I didn’t use any hairspray in any of my photos, but spraying a little will help hold the curls even longer.
Additional tips:
  1. Clips with the “no slip grip” are helpful. You can get them.
  2. Take a look at the 1st photo below. I used 2 smaller clips on the ends of my hair and used a bigger clip right in the middle to further secure the hold. Pay close attention to securing the ends properly so that the ends dry in the twists. This will help create uniform waves throughout the lengthen of your hair.
  3. If you have super straight hair and are super picky about the ends curling just right… in the morning, unclip and while your hair is still in the twists, take a curling iron and lightly curl the two ends of the twists. Then flip your hair over to see your beautiful waves!
  4. Don’t worry if your long hair is creating a long “u” shape in step 2 (see 2nd photo below). You may feel like you have floppy ears.
  5. Since the twists are at the sides of your face, you can sleep comfortably on your back. Are you a side sleeper?! Sorry…  well at least you can take this opportunity to change your sleeping position. Dermatologists recommend sleeping on your back over any other position anyway because it helps prevent premature wrinkles and aging on your face and neck! :) Just sayin.

SIMPLE VINTAGE WAVES

SIMPLE VINTAGE WAVES

Every girl should be armed with the knowledge of how to do a quick vintage inspired Veronica Lake-esque wave in under 30 minutes. It’s one of the best ways to up the fancy factor on clean dry hair before heading out for a big night. The whole point of this tutorial is to do the exact same wave, one right next to the other and develop a pattern. So read the instructions, but more importantly follow the photos. Here we go!
  1. Find a good deep side part. Veronica Lake always had a nice heavy side part which is what made this look so sexy. This wave is not quite as powerful when done with a middle part. Once you find your side part, clip the top half of the heavier side up as seen in photo #1.
  2. Start with curling the section right above your ear. Use either a 1″ wand or a 1″ barrel curling iron. 1″ may seem small to you but it’s the best way to get this look in my opinion. Curling iron-wise I prefer to use this one. With this hair style, it’s important to let the hair get as hot as you can without burning it. You be the judge, as everyone’s hair is different. Tip: sometimes instead of leaving it on longer, I unravel it and do it again– “twice baked”!
  3. For steps 3, 4 and 5, you want to do the EXACT same thing right one right next to the other. Wrap curl the hair forward toward your face. You want to make sure you’re seeing a perfect curl pattern. If not, curl that piece again!
  4. Do the next piece.
  5. And the next one just the same.
  6. Now switch sides and repeat. Do one curl after the other in the exact same pattern. You’ll start to notice a sort of Shirley Temple curl happening. That’s good. Your hair should look like noodles and this is the ONLY time I will say that’s okay.
  7. Once the curls are in place, spray with a firm holding hairspray. I like to spray after so the hairspray sits on top of the hair instead of cooking it into the hair which can make it heavier. My favorite for this style is the WarrenTricomi Superhold hairspray because it has an insanely firm hold when you put it on which allows it to set better, but then after you brush it it’s completely soft again. Allow that to set for 5 minutes in a cool, dry room.
  8. After everything cools, take the fine side of your comb and start combing through the curls. As you comb around the entire head, the curl pattern will start to join together.
  9. Keep combing and combing and combing. (Apply a little more hairspray or re-curl a curl if/when necessary.)
  10. If you’ve curled all your sections the exact same way right next to each other, you’ll start to see a perfect pattern form as you’re combing.
  11. Take your 1″ barrel curling iron (not a wand) and curl any straight stray ends under.
  12. Give it one last veil of hairspray and you’re set!

Thick Summer Braid - Hair Tutorial

Thick Summer Braid - Hair Tutorial

This is one of my favourite hairstyles this summer! It's fairly simple if you are comfortable with french braiding. It can be a great everyday look to keep your hair off your face when it's hot out, or it can be dressed up for something more formal.

Step 1: Part your hair on the side.
Step 2: Separate the bang section, from the rest of your hair.
Step 3: Divide the bang section into 3 sections.
Step 4: Start to french braid the bang section down, keeping it as close to your face as possible.
Step 5: Continue to add small sections to your braid until you reach your neck, then add the rest of your hair into the three sections evenly.
Step 6: Braid the rest of your hair and secure with an elastic.
Step 7: Now, of the most important steps in this tutorial is loosening the braid (Shown below). This step, will take you from looking like a german girl in 50 First Dates to looking like you have beautiful thick mermaid hair.

Braid Crown Tutorial for Long Hair

Braid Crown Tutorial for Long Hair

Hey long-haired ladies, this style starts with a basic you may remember from yesteryear — pigtail braids. Section hair into two, equal pigtails that sit low, beginning at the nape of the neck. Braid, then cross the braids and wrap upward around the crown of your head before securing with bobby pins.

Half-Up Crown Braid

Half-Up Crown Braid

This look is super easy and very cute. It’s good for date night or just hanging out with your girlfriends. I love to braid, it is definitely my go-to style, so here’s another one I can add to my arsenal.
1. Part your hair down the middle, and grab a large section of your hair on one side.
2. Begin braiding this section. You’ll want to have it at a slant, not straight back and not straight down either. Once you’ve finished, secure with an elastic band.
3. Repeat on the other side
4. Cross the first one behind your head so it goes down to the nape of your neck. You don’t want it straight across because it will seem childish. Having it swoop down allows for a more feminine and mature feel. Pin it in place with bobby pins. Hide the tail; if it’s long enough, you can fold it in half and tuck it under, or just tuck it underneath your hair.
5. Repeat on the other side.
t’s effortless and cool and it’s sure to impress wherever you go!
