Pretty Simple : Grown - Up Topsy Tail

Pretty Simple : Grown - Up Topsy Tail

Today’s hair tutorial just might be my favorite one yet — aside from the fact that it’s super easy to do yourself and looks gorgeous, it’s also a total blast from the past. Did anyone else used to rock a topsy tail in the 90′s? This version by Martha Lynn is a little more dressed up and modern and is perfect for second-day hair. I also love that it’s a sleek way to pull long hair back in this increasingly hot and steamy weather, without looking too updo-ish. Keep reading for the step-by-step, and let us know if this is a look you’d rock!
  1. Pull hair in to a mid-height ponytail.
  2. Pull a small section of hair out from ponytail, and wrap around elastic. Secure with bobby pins.
  3. Tie a small, clear elastic around ponytail approximately three inches down from the base of the ponytail to create your first “section”. Then carefully separate this first section in half as pictured to create a hole.
  4. Flip remaining tail over and pass through the hole created in step 3.
  5. Pull tail through and adjust as needed.
  6. Use a clear elastic to tie off a second section of hair, approximately three inches below the first. Repeat steps 3-5.

3 Ways to Use Texturizing Powder Today

3 Ways to Use Texturizing Powder Today

Not that we consider heat styling to be the worst thing that ever happened to our morning routines, but it’s safe to say we’re happy to forgo a date with the curling iron every once in a while. That doesn’t mean our tresses have to go untouched. Enter: texturizing powder. Just a dash makes all the difference.

1. Fatten Up Your Braid

Perfect plaits are so overrated. Make it a braid with body. Braid your hair as you normally would. Then simply sprinkle the powder down the center of the braid and muss it up with your fingers. The more you work in the product, the bigger your braid gets.

2. Create Tousled Waves

Give your natural texture a little extra oomph. Apply the powder all over and twist random sections for a beachy, tousled look. And for body at the crown, massage texturizing powder on the roots.

3. Make Your Messy Bun Messier

When it comes to messy buns, messier is always better. First, add texture to the length of your hair, then throw it up into a bun and play with it some more. Add a dash of product to your fingers for extra grip while you rough up your undone updo.

1. Create texture. "Before you start braiding, amp up your hair's texture with a texturizing spray," says Pucciarello. Model and founder of Electric Picks Jewelry MJ Barton used Oribe Dry Texturizing Sprayhere.
2. Clip up the front part of your hair. "You'll want to section off this portion of your hair so that you can tease the area directly behind it, clear back to the crown of your head," he says.
3. Tease your hair. "Starting from the section directly behind the clip at the front of your head, tease your hair using a rattail comb all the way back to your crown to create a ton of volume," says Pucciarello.
4. Start French braiding. "Take a section of hair that's an inch and a half thick on both sides of your head, directly in line with your temples, and begin French braiding down the back of your head," he says.
5. Continue braiding all of your hair, slightly pulling the braid to one side. "Then, secure the braid with a clear elastic and wrap a small section of hair from your ends around the hair tie to conceal it," he adds.
6. Gently pull the braid apart with your fingers to give it a thicker, cool-girl appearance.
7. Remove the clip and tease. "Take out the clip at the front of your head and tease that section with a rattail comb, before softly combing it back to make it blend in with the rest of your hair," says Pucciarello. "This will give your hair that Brigitte Bardot body."
8. Hit your braid with dry texturizing spray once more. "This will help it set the style and also give it that undone look that everyone is after," he says. MJ used Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray again here.

How To: The Ballerina Bun

How To: The Ballerina Bun

Let’s face it. At one point all of us had aspirations to be a ballerina. Who wouldn’t want to twirl around in a tutu and ballet slippers? For most, this dream is just that — a dream. However, just because we aren’t destined to star in Swan Lake doesn’t mean we can’t look the part. One way you can channel your inner ballerina princess is by donning the signature hairstyle. Makeup and hair pro Emma Willis of Contour Fossa shows us how to rock the braided ballerina bun so we can look every bit the part of a graceful dancer.

Step 1. Section off a two-inch piece of hair from the front of your head. Pull the rest of your hair up into a high ponytail and secure with an elastic band.
Step 2. Pull a 1/2-inch piece of hair from the front side and split into two separate pieces. Pull a 1/4-inch section out of the ponytail and start braiding with the other two pieces of hair.
Step 3. Continue braiding, using the French braid technique of gradually adding pieces to the braid as you work your way around the head. Stop once you have pulled all the hair from the pony.
Step 4. Wrap the braid into a bun and secure with bobby pins. For a fuller look, loosen the bun with your fingers. Finish the look by spraying the hairstyle with a strong-hold hairspray (we recommend L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Bold Control Hairspray).

How to : Half - Up Ponytail

How to : Half - Up Ponytail

Much like pigtails and claw clips, the half pony is a bit underrated in the world of hair. It’s possible that a few bad, scrunchie-laden years in our past have given this hairstyle a bad rap, but we know potential when we see it. Once you see how hair and makeup expert Elyse Reneau transforms this ’do from bland to boho chic, you’ll want to give the half pony the revival it deserves.

1. Curl hair to add texture and apply a texturizing spray like Kérastase Powder Bluff Texturing Dry Shampoo. Brush through.
2. Part hair in the center, then take a section of hair on each side and create two French braids
3. Gently tug the strands of the braids apart without pulling them out. This will help create volume.
4. Use a little gel like L’Oréal Paris Studio Line Clean Gel to style the top and smooth the sides.
5. Pull each section of hair from the sides into a pony at the back of your head.
6. Leaving one of the braids out, tie the hair from your pony into a loose knot. Wrap the remaining braid around your knot and push it down to pin into place.

How to Tease Your Hair (The Right Way!)

How to Tease Your Hair (The Right Way!)

We haven’t been called a tease since we left our fourth grade crush a love note then ran away when he tried to kiss us. Our hair on the other hand? We’re happy to tease that until the end of time. Though sleek will always be sexy, we’re under the overall impression that bigger is better when it comes to our locks. Just to clarify, we’re not talking Bump-It status volume; no, we’re all about teasing our hair so it looks natural, voluminous and bouncy – not fake or too done-up.  The key to teasing your hair the right way? Read on to find out…

Instructions

1. Section: Use your comb to separate the back of your hair into a 2-3 inch wide section, starting 2 inches from your crown.

2. Tease:
Gently backcomb this section of hair.  The key is to avoid combing vigorously back and forth – this can damage your hair and cause breakage. Instead, brush downwards 3-4 inches from above your roots, pull out the comb, and repeat.

3. Spray:
Give this section of hair a quick spray with your favorite hairspray. We loveL’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray for brushable hold. Your hair might look a bit crazy right now, but not to worry – we’ll be smoothing it out in the next step. *Depending on the thickness of your hair, you may want to repeat steps 2 – 3 with sections on the left and right side of your part for added volume.

4. Smooth:
Take your comb and very gently smooth out the top of your teased sections. If you find your hair losing volume, just slide the end of your comb underneath the section and give it a lift.   And there you go! Now go practice tossing that big, bouncy hair.

HOW TO CURLS YOUR HAIR WITH A STRAIGHTENER

HOW TO CURLS YOUR HAIR WITH A STRAIGHTENER

As beauty junkies, we’ve developed a variety of interesting skills—some we’re not so proud of (like, uh, painting our nails on the highway… it had to be done)—while others we broadcast proudly. Filed under our list of honorable skills, is our fine-tuned ability to curl our strands with a straightener. Yes, you read that correctly. While it might seem counterintuitive, some of us here at MDC even prefer curling with a straightener to a curling iron. Bold statements, we know. To guide you through the easy-peasy steps, we created the tutorial below, showcased on our very own strands.
1. Start with dry hair that’s either straight or wavy. Take your hot straightener and clamp it down half way down the strand of hair. This is our preferred placement for big loose curls, but if you just want to perk up your ends, start about ¾ of the way down the strand.
2. Next comes the key move. Lift your elbow upwards, while clamping the hair.
3. In an outward motion, twirl your hair around the barrel of the straightener, leaving the ends out for a more relaxed look. For perfectly polished, bouncy curls include the ends.
4. Repeat steps two and three with one-inch sections all the way around your head.
5. Spritz your hair with hairspray, shake out your curls, and feel accomplished.
