If you like to put your hair up in a Bun, you should give these pins a spin!
If you like to put your hair up in a bun, you should give these pins a spin! It only takes two to hold up even the thickest of hair. This is a great alternative to using 3 dozen bobby pins to keep that perfect bun in place. I’ve purchased them from both Target and Walmart. I’m certain they are also sold online or at beauty supply stores.

Camouflage Your Roots
Listen up, blondies! If its been a while since your last salon visit, there are a few ways to camouflage those dark roots. Whether your hair is freshly clean or not, spray them with dry shampoo, and then style your hair with a messy side part. Just zig zag your part a bit with a fine-tooth comb to help conceal those roots until your next hair appointment.

TRIPLE BRAIDED BUN
Ever since Martha Lynn shared this hair style with us, it’s been our go-to look for fabulous hair on the fly. Safe to say this updo is one of the easiest we’ve featured in our Pretty Simple series — if you can braid, you can achieve these ornate buns in minutes. And worry not, this romantic do suits nearly everyone (even if you don’t have Claire’s long locks). I have to warn you though: once you try these braided buns, you just might (actually… most definitely will) get hooked. Keep reading for the tutorial!
- Section hair into three vertical sections and pull back section into a ponytail.
- Braid ponytail and secure at the end.
- Tie braid in a knot and tuck the tail behind the knot. Secure with a bobby pin.
- Braid side section and secure at the end.
- Pull braid towards the back bun and tie in a knot. Again, tuck the tail behind the bun and secure with bobby pins.
- Repeat steps 4 & 5 with final section and spray all over.

COOL AND SEXY WRAPAROUND BUN
You guys, how gorgeous is this super textural bun on Cristina? No beauty school needed to put this look together, all it requires is your run-of-the-mill ponytail, some bobby pins and a can of hair spray. I’m loving this do for an event that begs for something just a little more festive than your average blowout, plus it’s perfect for showing off your favorite pair of earrings. Love this bun as much as I do? You can thank Martha Lynn for the fabulous tutorial and Kate LeSueur for the gorgeous photos… keep reading for the step-by-step!
- Pull hair into a mid-level ponytail, leaving out the section of hair from the ear forward. hint: this is the trick that can be applied to almost any fun updo — leave a front section of hair out and you can do something fun with it later.
- Take a small section of hair from the ponytail, and wrap it around the elastic.
- Pin to head in various places along the wrapped section.
- Continue pulling sections of the ponytail and wrapping loosely around the first in opposite directions, this adds more texture than spiraling the whole ponytail at once.
- Wrap final piece and pin to secure.
- Tease the front section of hair.
- Sweep back sections and tuck under bun, wrapping around it if your hair is long.
- Pin sections and spray all over to keep in place.

ROMANTIC TWISTED CHIGNON
Today’s updo is super feminine (perfect for V-day rendezvous!), but is actually so much simpler than it appears. This twisting technique can be adapted into totally different looks, too: instead of using five smaller sections the way this detailed updo does, try experimenting with an eye-catching ponytail made from two larger sections. All you need to master are the basics: gather hair like you’re putting it half up, twist, push up for volume, and pin! So what do you think… would you try this look for your next night out?
- Section hair at the top, gather angling backward and twist to the right. Gently push hair forward to create height, and pin to secure.
- Gather another section of hair below the first, just above the ears, and twist to the lift. Gently push hair forward and pin to secure.
- Continue sectioning layers of hair and twisting in alternating directions until you’re left with just the “tail”.
- Twist tail and tuck upward to create a bun. Secure with pins and spray all over.

BIG BALLERINA BUN
Do you all have a go-to hair style for those mornings when you don’t feel like spending more than 90 seconds on your entire outfit? For me, a bun at the nape of my neck is always a safe bet, and even on days when I do put a lot of thought into my hair, it still always winds up in a low bun by lunch time. Which is why I’m excited for today’s tutorial in which Martha Lynn proves that my comfort hairdo has a slightly-more-glamorous (and a whole lot larger) big sister, and after seeing the super easy step-by-step, I’m not so afraid to give her a try. Follow the jump to see how it’s done!
- Start with hair in a classic ponytail. We chose to begin with a deep side part. Slide the mesh donut onto the ponytail, up around the elastic.
- Tease ponytail in sections to add texture, then spray each section.
- Roll sections inward, and tuck behind the mesh donut. Secure with bobby pins.
- Repeat with remaining ponytail sections all the way around the donut. Spray entire bun.

BANDED PONYTAIL
Today’s installment of Pretty Simple is near and dear to my heart for two reasons: first, Michelle’s long locks are just the reinforcement I (Chanel) needed to resist all urges to cut my hair. And second, is anybody else instantly reminded of Princess Jasmine when they look at this picture? I don’t know about you all, but since seeing this completed look I’ve been dying to host a Disney movie night just to rewatch some of my childhood favorites (and maybe pick up some beauty tips while I’m at it). This look is super easy to acheive, and even if your hair isn’t 3 feet long, you can still totally rock it by just subtracting a few links. Keep reading for the step-by-step instructions and a list of the products you’ll need, all brought to us by Martha Lynn and photographed by Cory Ryan.
- flat brush
- hair serum (we like this one by Kerastase)
- black or colorful hair elastics
- Brush hair into a ponytail and secure with an elastic. For added volume, tease beforehand.
- Continue tying elastics, spaced about 2 inches apart.
- Starting with the top link, gently tug on hair to loosen sections.

CLASSIC SIDE PONYTAIL
In case you’re just now joining us, welcome to the second installment of Pretty Simple. Since Martha Lynnkicked off the column last week, we’ve been thrilled to see that so many of you are just as excited as we are to be getting insider access to the latest on-trend beauty techniques. Now that we’ve got teasing covered (have you all been practicing?), we thought a classic side ponytail would be the perfect lesson to follow with… it’s super simple, and perfect for day or night.
- Tease around the crown (according to these instructions) to create volume. Then separate one back section and two front sections by parting at the ear, as pictured.
- Pull back section into a low side ponytail, keeping it below the ear to avoid an 80′s do. tip: always pull your ponytail to the side of your part that has more hair - that way you’re not fighting against the natural direction of your hair.
- Fasten ponytail with an elastic.
- Pull back larger front section.
- Wrap around elastic and secure with bobby pins. Repeat with smaller front section and spray all over.
- For an alternate look, fold ponytail underneath to create a low bun, and secure with large bobby pins.

ROCKER CHIC - Hairstyles
I love a good transformation! We all have our “go to” day-to-day looks, but it’s always fun to transform ourselves by simply upping the glam for a special occasion. Martha Lynn here, with a special SXSW-inspired edition of Pretty Simple: When Lauren walked into my salon, I couldn’t believe she was the same girl I had seen headbanging onstage in the band Ume. Could this demure beauty possibly be the same Telecaster-shredding star of one of Austin’s most powerful and high-energy live acts? The petite blonde with a sweet, Southern drawl says she gets that a lot — “I’m kind of a Jekyl-and-Hyde. People don’t even recognize me from onstage to off. They’re like, ‘Hey you kind of look like that girl that was just playing guitar…’
Lauren’s one of those natural beauties that can throw on some lip gloss and walk out the door. She says that she’s usually working on band business at home, so most days she skips makeup altogether — lucky girl. But for the stage, she likes to turn up the volume with more eye makeup, a bold lip and, of course, major hair. It’s safe to say that Lauren has perfected the art of tossing those blonde layers around the stage as she commands her honey-toned Fender. She was even kind enough to give us a sampling of a few of her signature stage moves! Read below to see how we transformed this artist from her day look to night:
Lauren’s Day Look
For day, we did a simple top knot and very light makeup. Everyone should have their “five-minute face” that they can use to get out the door fast! For me, it’s a little concealer, mascara and blush.

We added tons of eyeliner, a bold lip and created what I call “mermaid waves” using an oval wand. You simply twist and wrap the hair around the wand and that’s it. I teased her hair at the crown for volume. I used Living Proof Flex to both set the waves as I was curling, and to finish it off at the end.

THE TRIFECTA BRAID
1. Prep your strands by running through TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Smoothing Serum
2. Grab three strands midway down your part and begin doing a Dutch braid
3. Pull apart the braid until it is as thick as you would like
4.. Grab three strands at the front of your part, this time small sections and do a classic micro braid
5.. Pull all of your hair back and divide into three sections and do a regular three strand braid
6. To finish pull that braid apart that large braid and you are done!
7. Bonus: To tame flyaways and hold the braided style, mist on TRESemmé Climate Protection Finishing Spray.

UPSIDE DOWN BRAIDED BUN
I have had a lot of requests for a how to for this look and so excited to finally do it! It is actually really easy, minus some blood rushing to your head haha
but here are the steps..
1. Tip your head upside down and grab three strands and begin to do a Dutch braid (Dutch just means you cross the outside strand UNDER the middle strand instead of over like you would a French braid!)
2. Once you have your dutch braid, secure it with an elastic and then pull your hair into a pony and secure that with an elastic.
3. To get rid of any grease and to give your pony some volume and texture, spray TRESemmé Fresh Start Dry Shampoo and then wrap your hair into a messy bun and secure it.
4. To finish, you can pull apart your braid to make it appear thicker and spray with TRESemmé Tres Two Extra Hold Hairspray!

THE STRAIGHTENER CURL
I have talked a lot about Sally Beauty here on the blog since I am always frequenting them for hair tools and and accessories. They are always my go to especially since there are more than 2,800 stores nationwide, I always have one near me so its always super convenient for me to just pop in. Sally Beauty is having a huge sale on styling tools right now and when you buy a styling tool online or in the store from now through the month of October you are automatically entered in a drawing to win a gift card to purchase a styling tool of your choice. 100 winners will be randomly selected so make sure you check out some of the styling tools!
I am showing you how to do some of my favorite curls today using styling tools from Sally Beauty! I am using the Plugged In Professional Turbo Dryer (on sale) and the Plugged In Pink Gem Flat Iron (also on sale) – if you are looking to get a lot of bang for your buck, these are your hot tools. Here are the steps on how I used these tools to get my curls..
1. Start with clean, blow dried hair. If your hair is frizzy, run the straightener through large chunks just to smooth it a bit before curling.
2. Take 1 inch sections and clamp the straightener on the hair and turn it to the right as you run it down the length of the hair. If your hair is long you may need to hold onto the ends of the hair to prevent them from slipping out. The more you turn the straightener, the tighter the curl will be. If your hair does slip out half way through the curl, pick up where the curl left off but you do not need to recurl the entire strand again, that will just cause further and unnecessary damage.
3. Do that to your entire head and then take large sections and lightly run the straightener over large chunks of just the ends to give it a beachy look.
4. Finish with hairspray and you are done!
