THE BANG overgrown TWIST

THE BANG overgrown TWIST

One of the most annoying things about bangs is when they grow out. Don’t want to bother getting them trimmed anytime soon? No problem, here is a quick and simple way to get them out of your face while keeping them volumized with no braiding.
To start off clip the front sections of your hair to the back (optional) and then section off your bangs from the rest of your hair.
Step 1. Pick up a thin portion of hair from where your bangs begin
Step 2. Split the portion into two sections.
Step 3. Place the strand furthest from your face over the one that is closet to your face and let it hang.
Step 4. Then take some hair at the bottom and add them in with the stand that’s hanging and bringing it up into the twist.
Step 5. Continue picking up hair from the bottom stand and adding it to the twist like you would a French braid.
Step 6. Once you feel like you got enough hair twisted, continue twisting the two strands without picking up any hair
Step 7. Pin the twisted hair to the side.
Steps 8 & 9. Tug the twists in opposite directions to loosen it up and give volume.
Voila! Now that you’re done with the twist, go ahead and style your hair the way you want. Enjoy creating this simple yet cute look!

MAKE WAVES! STEP INTO SUMMER WITH BOUNCY, BIG & BEAUTIFUL curls!

MAKE WAVES! STEP INTO SUMMER WITH BOUNCY, BIG & BEAUTIFUL curls!

Step 1: The first step in creating big, bouncy curls is to apply a curl boosting mousse while the hair is still damp (you can also apply it to dry hair but it won’t spread out as evenly). I used Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Curl Boosting Mousse.
Step 2: After applying the mousse, I went in with a root plumper to give my hair a little more body. I used Catwalk Volume Collection Your Highness Root Boost Spray from TIGI.
Steps 3 & 4: After your hair dries completely, you can begin sectioning your hair. For each section, apply a heat protectant (I used TRESemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Leave-In Spray) and brush out any knots.
Step 5: Curl 1/2″-1″ strands of hair at a time with a clip-free curling wand. The curling wand I used is the Remington Keratin Therapy 1 1/2″. Keep sectioning and curling your hair until your entire head is complete.
Steps 6 & 7: After your curls are completed, play with your hair a little until it is positioned the way you like and then use hairspray to finish. I used TRESemme Tres Two Spray in Extra Hold.

THE MINI DOUBLE WATERFALL TWIST

THE MINI DOUBLE WATERFALL TWIST

Chanel your inner bohemian goddess this summer with the mini half-up double waterfall twist — a version of the classic waterfall twist, this ultra-cool style is easy-to-do and gives an effortlessly beachy vibe.
  1. Start with hair’s natural texture—subtle waves will enhance this style’s beachy feel.
  2. Take a small section of hair close to the temple, leaving some pieces to hang loosely in front, and separate that section into two equal pieces.
  3. Twist the piece closest to the hairline over the second piece.
  4. Holding the two pieces of hair in one hand, grab a small piece of hair from above the twisted section in your other hand and place it between the first and second pieces. Let the new piece hang loosely—you will never add hair to the original sections.
  5. Twist the piece closest to the hairline over the second piece again and place a new section of hair from above the twist between the original two pieces.
  6. Continue twisting the two original sections, adding a new piece of hair between each one, until the braid reaches the back of your head; secure the braid with a bobby pin.
  7. Repeat steps two through six on the opposite side—make sure to use sections of hair even with and similar in size to the first side.
  8. Once both sides of the head have been braided, unpin the braids and secure them with a thin or clear elastic.
  9. Disguise the elastic by wrapping a strand of hair from underneath a braid around the elastic.
  10. Secure the wrapping strand with a bobby pin.

PERFECT THE NATURAL - LOOKING AND CLASSIC WAVE

PERFECT THE NATURAL - LOOKING AND CLASSIC WAVE

Step 1: The first step in any hairstyle involving a heat tool is to prep your hair. I usedTRESemme Keratin Smooth Heat Protection Shine Spray first, followed by a light misting of TRESemme Ultra Fine Mist Hair Spray. I find that prepping my hair with hairspray helps the curls to hold better. The secret to a classic wave hairstyle is a small barrel curling iron, a clip-less one that is. I will be using my Cortex 4 in 1 curling iron setwith the smallest barrel which is a 1/2-1″. Now on to the fun part!
Step 2: I started off by pulling half of my hair up so that I could start with the bottom section of hair first. The key is to work with smaller sections, about an inch wide, and curl each section going away from either side of your face. My curling iron is set to 290 degrees and, I hold each section for 10-15 seconds.
Steps 3, 4, & 5: Before you let your curl go, hold it in your hand for about 10 seconds and hair spray it so that way it has time to cool down and holds its shape. Now you can curl the rest of your hair!
Step 6: After you are done curling your hair, take a hair brush and gently run the brush through your curls. I know this seems like the perfect way to ruin all the time you just spent curling your hair, but trust me this will give you the perfect wave!
Step 7: Finish off with some hairspray and voila! The perfect classic wave is complete!

Tuesday Tutorial: The Braided Crown

Tuesday Tutorial: The Braided Crown

During our youth, crowns symbolized grace, greatness, and of course, beauty. And these were just the plastic Toys “R” Us bargain bin tiaras. As we grew older, we grew wiser, and sadly the crowns that once used to captivate us lost their luster. That is, until we discovered not all crowns are pink and covered in heart-shaped adhesive rubies. Once we realized the prettiest crowns could be crafted from the very hairs on our heads, they immediately regained their significance. Hair guru Jessica Scantlin, who shares our affinity for the regal ‘do, helped us create this clean and simple braided crown. And we must say, it’s fit for a queen…way better than any Fisher-Price number.

  1. Starting just behind one ear, separate a section of hair that you will braid. Leave a 1” section of hair around your hairline. Clip the rest of the hair to keep it out of the way.
  2. Begin a Dutch braid (or reverse French braid) starting at the base of the ear. When you first begin the braid, tilt your head to one side to get a better angle.
  3. Braid all the way across to the other ear. Use a few bobby pins to pin the braid behind your ear.
  4. Unclip the front section of hair. Find your natural part and smooth down each side. Pull remaining hair over to the side where you ended the braid and tie it off in a ponytail.
  5. For a sleek finish, tackle flyaways with a small amount of styling cream like Redken Move Ability 05 Lightweight Defining Cream Paste. For a slightly undone feel, add some texturizing powder like L’Oréal Professionnel True Grip and muss up the braid with your fingers.

4 Signs You’re Ready for a Major Haircut

4 Signs You’re Ready for a Major Haircut

Has your hair been looking a little off? Something just isn't working, yet you can’t put your finger on it. Chances are you're in need of a haircut. Many times we go to our stylist and request "just a trim," which is fine and will serve as a great temporary fix. However, if you’re feeling like your hair is in need of a little extra love, it may be time for a bit of an overhaul. Not sure if this applies to you? Follow my guide below to find out if it’s time for your hair to get a makeover!

Your Hair Refuses to Be Styled
Have you found yourself increasingly opting for a top knot or ponytail lately? If styling your hair has become somewhat of a hassle, it’s probably been far too long since you've had a cut! Next time, you head to the salon, go for a look with sharp angles around your face.It will help your hair keep its shape longer and allow for longer stretches of time in-between snips.

Flat Strands

Are your blowouts not as voluminous as usual? Chances are that your hair is getting a little heavy and needs to be lightened up. Try going for a more layered look, it will help you maintain your volume and give you an added boost of texture! (In the meantime, try giving your roots a spritz with Kérastase Resistance Spray Volumifique.)

Lack of Shine

Another way you can always tell it’s time for a major haircut is if you’re noticing your hair is lacking inshine and vibrancy. Over time, as your hair grows and is subject to styling tools and other everyday wear-and-tear elements, it will start to lose its shine and begin to look dull. It’s time to chop! For a temporary shine re-boost, try Garnier Fructis Brilliantine Shine Glossing Spray)

Tangled Tresses

Have you started to notice that your hair is getting tangled a lot easier and more often than usual ? This is probably because you need a little maintenance. Once the ends of your hair begin splitting, it can make it  easier for your hair to get tangled. This is due to your cuticle losing the smoothness it had when it was healthy and freshly trimmed.
Getting a major cut not only updates your look, but revives your hair and restores its luster. Get some inspiration by checking out the top hair trends for 2015!

How to Layer Hair Products Without Messing Up Your Mane

How to Layer Hair Products Without Messing Up Your Mane

Let’s face it: No one wakes up with naturally perfect, textured hair. It just doesn’t happen. Any and all hairstyles ranging from the sleek and straight to elaborate updos need some help to look and stay fabulous. Luckily for us there’s a beauty product for any hairstyle and concern at our fingertips. Need some added texture to your limp locks? There’s a product for that! Need a little added shine to your dull mane? There’s a product for that! Need to refresh your hairstyle before you head out to happy hour with your girlfriends? That’s right, there’s a product for that! But just because there’s a solution to all hair issues under the sun, doesn’t mean we should be piling them all on haphazardly. In fact, if done wrong, you could end up with a greasy, gunky mess! Check out our must-know rules to layering hair products!

Rule of Threes
When it comes to layering products, it’s important to survey your hair situation for the day and pick no more than three items to address those hair issues. Any more than three products could leave your hair greasy and gross. Check out our suggestions for hair product combos (and product recommendations!):
For sleek, shiny hair: Leave-in conditioner + heat protectant (prior to using a blow dryer or flat iron) + smoothing serum or oil
For beachy waves: Leave-in conditioner + sea salt spray + styling wax
For texture: Volumizing spray + styling wax
For natural volume: Leave-in conditioner or detangler + root lifter + volumizing spray
For glossy curls: Anti-frizz serum + leave-in conditioner + flexible hold hair spray or setting spray
Product Recommendations: Matrix Biolage HydraSource Daily Leave-In TonicRedken Satinwear 02 - Prepping Blow-Dry LotionGarnier Fructis Marvelous Oil Frizz DefyKérastase Lift Vertige,L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle TXT IT Hyper-Fix Putty
Follow Directions
There’s a reason all hair products come with application instructions. All products work differently and are activated by different elements. For example, heat protectants, root lifters and most volumizing sprays should be applied prior to taking a blowdryer or heating tool to your mane. Leave-In conditioners and anti-frizz serums should be applied to clean, damp locks. Make sure you carefully read the directions on your product packaging and allow it to guide your hairstyling process.
Don’t Mix Products With the Same Purpose
When layering products, make sure each one has a distinct role. Avoid mixing products that serve the same purpose. For example, combining items designed to set and hold a style (like gel and hairspray or mousse and hairspray) could leave your hair crunchy and stiff. By the same token, mixing a sea salt sprayand texturizing powder could be overkill and leave your hair feeling sticky and unmanageable.
Apply Sparingly
Do not, we repeat, DO NOT put gobs and gobs of product in your hair. This principle is particularly important when layering products. Apply small portions of creams and serums (about a dime-sized amount each) and be sure to hold all sprays about six inches away from your hair. If needed, gradually build on your product portions, but it’s important to keep it light to avoid product build-up.
