How to: The Bow Bun

How to: The Bow Bun

Top knots, messy buns, sock buns, braided buns, and the list goes on. It’s safe to say our hair has spent of good portion of its lifetime in bun form. The basis of its appeal is simple: a good bun is a quick and easy hairstyle that doesn’t require a lot of effort to look chic. Plus, there’s a bun for every occasion. There are buns that make perfect oops I overslept hair solutions, buns that we break out for special events, and buns that fit nicely into both categories, like the bow bun. Need proof? Professional mane maven Emma Willispulled together this pretty-as-a-present look in just four steps.

  • Ponytail. You can make your ponytail as high or low as you please.
  • Loop. Pull your ponytail through the hair tie to create an open loop. Leave a few inches hanging down.
  • Split the loop. Split the loop down the center to create two even sections. These will be the loops of the bow. Use bobby pins to pin down the backside of each loop.
  • Twist the Tail. Take the remaining section of the ponytail that is hanging down and twist it. Lift that piece up over the center and pin it in place. (For extra staying power, spray L’Oréal Elnett Satin Hairspray Strong Hold all over.)

6 Hacks for Your Best Hair This Week

6 Hacks for Your Best Hair This Week

Nothing ruins your week like a bad hair day (or seven). Instead, set yourself up for strand success by taking care of your locks from shower to bun! Not sure what we mean? You will once your check out our tips for your best hair this week (uhm, and of your life!) because sometimes hair has a mind of its own .

Cleanse & Condition: The most essential key to your best hair this week (and ever!) starts with sudsing in the shower. The wrong shampoos can leave your locks feeling high and dry, or heavy and greasy — even though you just washed! An alternative is a cleansing conditioner— ever heard of it?
Biolage Cleansing Conditioners have the smoothing qualities of a hydrating treatment that cleanses away dirt and residue without stripping away the good stuff. So, you’re left with a lightweight feel (ideal for styling!) and super shiny strands in just five minutes.
Style Safely: If you’re not using a protectant product and your hot tool is set to the blazing-heat-of-the-sun, it’s no wonder your hair is on the dry, brittle side! How do you expect to rock luscious locks this week with that texture?! Redken Hot Sets 22 Thermal Setting Mist – Heat Protectant Spray will do the trick.
Get Your Shine On: All that heat sucks the moisture right out of your not-so-silky strands. Tame frizz and add shine with Garnier Fructis Marvelous Oil Frizz Defy for hair that looks like it’s never been touched by damaging agents like heat, hard water, hair color, the sun, air, and, well, life …
Utilize Dry Shampoo: Seriously, dry shampoo is your BEST friend. And if it isn’t, it should be. Keep your roots oil-free when you’re on day two, three or even four. What? Don’t look so surprised! We won’t judge if you don’t. Plus, it’s the perfect product to up your volume and your confidence.
Rock a Pony: Not ready to wash your locks yet (thank you dry shampoo!)? Then it’s ponytail time. Maintain your chic-ness by rocking one of these three low pony looks  at the office or out with friends, or seriously anywhere for that matter because you look amaze!
Then a Messy Bun: When in doubt, throw it all up in a messy bun. Then start the cycle all over again.

    Weekendspiration: Easy Glamorous Evening Curls

    Weekendspiration: Easy Glamorous Evening Curls

Two syllables just taste so good when they hit the lips. As the weekend creeps closer, we tend to look for ways to elevate our beauty routine from simple to glamorous, without spending the whole night primping and prodding. To satiate our desire for retro elegance that’s quick to come by, we got a step by step tutorial from professional hairstylist Jackson Simmonds of Julien Farel Salon at Langham Place for his take on modern, easy Veronica Lake-inspired curls.

    1. For a retro style, your curls should start about halfway down your head. Hold the curling iron so the clamp is at the center of the hair (instead of the top) and rotate outward.
    2. Separating hair into one inch sections, repeat step one all over your head.
    3. To add even more polish, go back through your hair and make sure all of your ends are curled. If some of your ends are straighter than others, wrap them around the barrel quickly.
    4. Once all of your hair is curled, marry your separate curls together into big waves by twisting the hair with your fingers.
    5. To keep the curls soft and the top flat, gently brush out the top of your hair and spritz gently with hairspray to keep your strands in place.
Next, grab your flirtiest dress, favorite beverage, and pretend Monday will never come.

How to Grow Out a Bob (and Still Look Good!)

How to Grow Out a Bob (and Still Look Good!)

Bobs are without a doubt having a moment right now. We've witnessed so many of our favorite celebrities and models ditch their length and opt for more chic, cropped cuts. I myself have shown you the way of the bob and how to find the right one for you! But as always, the cycle continues and is now ushering us into a land of long locks .... So what now? Growing out your hair can be less than pleasant as it can leave you in a weird limbo stage. You need to get from point A to point B, and absolutely can't lose any good face time in the process! I'm here to help! If you’re feeling like it's time to grow towards something longer, let's get right to it!

    Messy Always Works

If you've found yourself in that awkward in-between phase of growing out your bob, you're probably feeling like your hair has lost all of its oomph. Maybe it's falling flat. Or maybe your blow outs are coming out a little too rounded? Try wearing it messy! This will work with both straight hair or hair that you've added some texture to with a curling iron. Scoop out a little pomade (my fav is L’Oréal Paris Studio Line Texture and Control Unkempt Out of Bed Texturizer) and heat it up in your hand with a blow dryer. Once the product becomes soft, flip your head over and run your fingers through your hair with the softened product. Flip your head back over and part as desired. This mussed-up style is the perfect way to give your hair a little extra kick!

    Stay On Schedule

When aiming for growth, your first inclination might be to refrain from trimming your hair. This is wrong, wrong, wrong. One major major way to stay looking fresh while growing out a bob is to stick to your cutting schedule. I recommend cutting it every eight weeks to keep the ends of your hair from splitting. Splits ends result from dry hair and can absolutely prevent you from obtaining length. If your locks are prone to dryness and breakage, try a strengthening solution like Redken Extreme Length Sealer - Treatment for Distressed Hair.

    Accessorize

We are continuously seeing hair accessories on runways and red carpets this season, and they are a fantastic way to make the most out of your look when in the midst of growing out your hair. You can try crystal bobby pins to secure one side of your hair back or even an elaborate headband when unable to do a ponytail. Accessorizing won't only aid you in the process but it will also bring your look to a new, trendier level.

Give It a Pop of Color

The process of growing your hair out can definitely lead to some drab days. One way I like to help my clients feel fabulous during this time is by switching up their color a bit. Whether it be adding baby lights to brighten your mane or a dramatic ombré to lend a little edge, giving your hair a color boost add some zest to even the dullest of days.
